Last night Nicholas was playing around with Micah on my bedroom floor. I was lying on the bed listening to them giggle. When Micah moved on to other things, Nicholas crawled up beside me.
"Mama," he said, "I so love having Micah in my life." And I so love having Nicholas in mine.

We Just Asked Her...
...and our mother bird in the woods said she is a Nighthawk.
Well, OK, what she actually said sounded more like "peen, peen, peen," but we understand this is Nighthawk for, well, just about anything a Nighthawk might have to say. The Whip-poor-will, on the other hand, makes a cheerful little sound resembling its name. While the birds look quite a lot alike and belong to the same family of Nightjars, these two songs are not easily confused. So, there you have it.

The Best Part of my Day so Far:
Performing outpatient surgery on Zachary's favorite stuffed dog, Sparky. We applied a local anesthetic before sewing his ear back on. It had torn pretty badly. Surgery went better than expected and when I sent the patient home with his owner, I told him to be sure Sparky took it easy the rest of the day. He might be sore later, but Zacky has stocked up on doggy Tylenol. I expect he'll be well taken care of and recover quickly.

Oz vs. oz.
When children know more about measurement than literature, they say things like...
Boy: Mom, what is this book about, "The Wizard of Ounce?"

Monday Morning
So, after a happy and boisterous weekend of celebration for friends and first communions and mother's day, Micah decides his four hour nap/crash the day before was enough. He was up earlier than usual and crawling all over me in bed. He sat on me and pushed me, trying to get me up. As I lay there wishing he'd just go back to sleep so I could get some much needed Z's, I rolled over into a familiar position. It was a position I used to assume when I was expecting this child, hoping to feel a motion that would tell me he was there. Suddenly, I was reminded of those days of eager anticipation, looking to get a response from this little person--a turn or twist or swish, a delicate and elusive hint of who was to come and now here he was pushing me out of bed with great force. You've come a long way, baby, and I love you so much.

Got Me
Zachy: Mom, what does J.H. stand for?
Me: I don't know.
Zachy: John Hancock. What does G.W stand for?
Me: George Washington?
Zachy: Yup. How about B.F?
Me: Ben Franklin.
Zachy: And P.R?
Me: Paul Revere.
Zachy: Nope-- public radio.
Me: I don't know.
