When the Turkey Hits the Oven

What is this thing?

This, friends, is not a chunk of space rock or the amazing results of a homeschool science project. This is nothing other than a gerbil sized mass of burned up food stuff found at the bottom of my oven. Two years ago we had something of a small fire in our oven and after I doused it with baking soda I closed the door and never looked back. Sure, there has been a faint smell of burning every time I've used the oven since, but I didn't let that inspire me to face the music.

Since we aren't traveling for Thanksgiving this year, I realized I will need to cook a turkey in that oven for several hours. I'd rather not burn the house down on a family holiday and so today, I'm cleaning my oven.

I had a problem recently too. Our tater tots tasted awful because of the smoke in the oven - you know it's bad when they won't eat tater tots.
When we moved I had forgotten to line the bottom of the oven with foil like I usually do. A couple of overflowing pies later and it was pretty gross. Try lifting the element a little (when it is cool, of course) and spread foil all over the oven bottom to ease the clean up of those yucky burned up things!

LOL
I needed this laugh!! I am reminded of two years ago when I was heating the oven for our turkey and the house filled with smoke because of the same problem. I managed to clean out in time and Thanksgiving was saved. There was no foul taste to the bird or fixings!!

Isn't that how you get "smoked turkey"??? At least my mother used to try smoking turkeys that way.

(My wife reads this blog so I had to direct that last comment at my mother who never gets on the computer.)

You gave me a great laugh this morning! I like that line, "...closed the door and never looked back..."

Now I'm inspired to go clean my oven and see what I've closed the door on!

This reminds me of the time we were cooking "cardboard" pizza (as we call it), and smoke started ROLLING out of the oven... we found a CORN DOG in the bottom of the oven... a very very BLACK corn dog. **Just imagine your nice black lump in the shape of a corn dog**

Thanks for sharing. I didn't think that there were any more of " my kind " out there. My family and I moved into this house almost five years ago. Though all of the appliances were previously used by the former owners I was thrilled that it had a self cleaning oven. The first year or so I kept the oven sparkling but the novelty soon wore off. Three months ago, this oven started acting up. It would take forever to preheat . Since I cook at least two meals a day, this was unacceptable. My husband and I decided that this one was probably just worn out and we purchased a new one .Before we had the new one delivered and the old hauled away I decided that I couldn't let the delivery guys see how nasty I let it get and cleaned it. Amazingly after a five hour cleaning cycle it heated up fine. It seems that the burnt on crud was blocking the gas line and only allowing so much gas so we only got so much heat. What a wonderful world it would be if If I could only enjoy cleaning!

Too funny, Suzanne. I see we resemble each other yet another way!
I guess this means I, too, need to clean my oven before Thanksgiving?! :-)
