Go Fish

We have a new pet. He is hairless and he doesn't eat flies, but he is a "him." Male Beta fish are more beautiful than females and the whole point of owning one of these is for their beautiful colors and long fins. This fish certainly has those things, but what he doesn't have is a name. Jacob tried to name him "Purply" because of his purple shimmer, but the others aren't going for it. Neither are they coming up with names of their own. Can you help us name our fish? Anyone? Please leave your suggestions in the combox. Thanks!

Bam Bam.

If your sons aren't familiar with the Flintstones and the total "boyness" of Bam Bam, then this of course won't make any sense to them. It just seemed a fitting name for a fish in a house of boys.

Hey, we have a Beta fish! He's a swell little guy. His name is George - as in Curious George - although my kids also wanted to call him Hugo. Hugo?

I had a fish. He was a good fish. And his name was Bob - due to the fact that he liked to bob on his back.

Hmm... "Purply" is interesting, but it seems the other boys would prefer something more subtle.

Let's see... "Nemo"? Too Disney. "Chicken of the Sea"? No, I guess that doesn't really fit. "Killer"? Probably not mom-approved.

I don't know -- how about "Frank"? For St. Francis of Assisi, you know. You could go with "Sir Frank" if you want to add a touch of chivalry.

No suggestions for a name but I love beta fishes. You can't beat them for easy care.

All my life I've only had one male pet...a dog, years ago, named Dr. Zhivago...my mother named him. How about "Shark" for your new pet?? :)

We have the same fish. Our neighbor gave it to us. To his credit, he asked me out of the presence of the children. I can't believe it's still alive -- three weeks now.

My five year old son named the fish -- "Anthony" -- after his good friend. Please feel free to use the name.

It's hard to tell from the pic what kind of purply shimmer he has, but Rainbow Fish (Marcus Pfister) is kind of blue and purply. But I'm not very good at naming fish -- ours is just Goldy.

When I was little our fish all had speedy names - Zip, Flash, Dart, and Comet. Of course, now that I think back on it, they were rather slow, and they sure never went anywhere. Hmm...

How about Finny?

Our last Beta was named Radius. I will be waiting until my two year old is a little bit older before we get another one, but the children have said that they will probably name their future fish Radius, again.

We've had two beta fish and each one lived to a very old age (for fish anyway) The first one we inherited from our little Spanish neighbor who had named him "Senor Pez Azul" (Mr. Blue Fish) We just kept on calling him Pez.
Our second beta was named "Finbar" and we called him "Finny" It seemed to be a great name for him.

Good Luck!

We've taken to naming our little "found" backyard pets after whatever Saint's feast day they are adopted on....an unfortunate turn of events for Aloysius Gonzaga the tadpole. He ended up being "Gonzo". :)

Sam, our second oldest son, named his fish "Juicebox".

Let me ask him. Okay, here he is. He says you should name your new Beta "Racecar".

My 10-year-old daughter wants in on the naming action. Initially, she said "Elle" but when she found out your fish is a boy (ugh) she suggested "Elmo". Or "Pirate". Or "Tiger Woods".

When I was a kid we had a male Beta and named him "Happy" because if you look carefully at his mouth it looks like he is always smiling :).

Good luck finding the perfect name!

Our beta is named "Walker", because he can't walk. I love that little guy. He watches me prepare dinner and does a little victory lap around his bowl when he sees me coming. He has alot of personality for a fish.

I like names like "Sam" or "Chuck" or "Bruce". or "Cyril"

Enjoy your new pet!

Since he's a "beta" fish, why don't you name him a greek name?

Ichthus?

My oldest dd recommends Odysseus or Poseiden....

Olympus?

What about Mars? After both the red planet, and the ancient warrior god?

As if you don't have enough suggestions, how about Gentian?
