Oh no, it's not much work at all. It only takes a little bit of effort to make all the labels and apply old posts to each label. Then, when you're done with that, you can assign your pre-existing labels to each new post.
I think it's a great feature. Labels make it so easy to find particular posts. And you post quite frequently, so I think it'd be worth your while (IMHO).
