The Promise of Bread

Out on the frozen uplands, underneath the snow
and sleet,
In the bosom of the plowland sleeps the Promise
of the Wheat.
With ice for head-and-footstone, and a snowy
shroud outspread
In the frost-locked tomb of winter sleeps the Miracle
of Bread...

by C.L. Edson

(This bread is a very hearty oatmeal sweetened with molasses. It's my father's own recipe. One slice of this with butter might just be enough for Almanzo Wilder's breakfast! Photo: The view from my baking stand window.)

A lovely poem, and beautiful bread! I see someone couldn't wait. :)

I see that someone else has already asked, but can I second the request for the recipe? I am drooling all over the keyboard.

Yummy! I love the poem and the snowy window, but that bread looks the best! Please do share the recipe!

What a beautiful scene you set with the poem, the window, and the image of freshly baked bread. I am feeling quite peaceful this morning. I was planning to bake a loaf of banana bread this morning. But, I too would go for that recipe if you choose to share. :)

I spent my day baking bread as well! There's just something so comforting about fresh bread, and being able to prepare that for my family gives me this... satisfaction... that I just can't explain.

(plus, the squeals of "oooh, Mommy! Can we eat some right now?" doesn't hurt either...)

I agree with the others -- will your dad mind if you share the recipe? It looks wonderful!

Scrumptious looking bread. Such cozy, comforting images of your homey haven... It's inspiring me take on some baking of my own!

Oh, can I come visit? I'll babysit!

The snow, the bread - can you say "happy home" any better way?

Also, here to beg for the recipe.

And we're all invited over to enjoy it with you?

Thank you, everyone! I have permission to give the recipe. Now I'm just trying to figure out the best way to do that.

Certainly everyone is invited here, but you should be aware that my real home is a lot noisier than my blog.
